Pedas are an all time favorite sweet. Pedas are like soft milk fudge. Pedas are grainy texture made with milk and sugar, flavored with cardamom. Peda can be served as a candy or as a dessert.
Recipe makes 24.
- 4 cup paneer
- 1/3 cup milk powder
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoon unsalted butter (ghee)
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder (ilatchi)
For Garnish:
- 1 tablespoon sliced pistachios
Method:
- Check the recipe for paneer and make the paneer with whole milk. For this recipe use 4 cups of milk.
- Heat the frying pan on medium. Add butter and let it melt.
- Next add milk, milk powder, and paneer. Mix it well.
- Cook mixture on medium heat stirring continuously until mixture starts leaving the sides of the frying pan and becomes like dough. This should take about 12 minutes. Now this is known as khoya.
- Transfer the khoya into a bowl and let it cool off until khoya becomes just lukewarm.
- Mix the sugar and cardamom powder into the khoya and knead it for about a minute until every thing blends together and become soft dough. Note: if you mix the sugar while khoya is hot that will make pedas soft.
- Divide the mix into about 20 equal parts and roll them into round balls. Lightly press it down so it looks like small patty.
- Put few pieces of sliced pistachios on every peda.
- Pedas should be served at room temperature.
- Pedas can be kept for few days at room temperature and about a month refrigerated.
Hello,
This recipe was double the awesome! I think this new way to make khoya is fabulous!!! Making khoya through milk is very time consuming. I love this recipe. Thank you so much for posting this!!!!!!!!!!
Hello Manjula ma’am ,
I’ve tried pedas recipe 2days back, it turned out wonderful. You have shown a very easy recipe, instead of reducing milk by stirring continuously for an hour. My daughter asked to make it again , I made it today too. Thank you for the easy way.
What is the sense first to make cheese, then add milk and milk powder to make Khoya ?
Khoya can be made straight from Milk.
Just for sake of writing recipe, it is really useless to add unnecessary steps for preparation.
hello manjulaji, your recipe for peda indeed looks easy and yummy…but i was wondering besides the ingrediants that you have used in this recipe can i also add some khoa to it along with the other ingrediants to make it even morerich in taste…..and at what point of the process can i add the khoa…..please let me know thank you….parizad (vancouver)

I found the peda recipe wonderful. May I ask you a question? What is paneer? According to my knowledge, I think it’s cheese but what type of cheese? Can I make Peda without this cheese.
I heard my mother saying that you need mavo, I don’t know what is this.
Can any body give me idea to make peda without paneer?
I shall appreciate any of yours idea.Thank you in advance and waiting for your favorable reply. My kind regard from Switzerland.

I am thrilled to have found your site Manjula, I followed the link from youtube. I love Indian sweets and now I can have them anytime. This recipe was easy to make and the video was very helpful. I was surprised how simple it was to make the paneer. My family has gluten allergies and your gluten free section is fabulous I will defiantly try some of these recipies . I am looking forward to your upcoming bessan roti, I really mis naan though.
Hi,
Tried these peda today..though they turned put great but they weren’t as smooth as yours..they had little grainy texture…
I used 2%milk…can that be a reason?or else the dough wasn’t ready?
Mine was grainy too and I used whole milk. In my case I believe that I did not remove enough liquid from the paneer.
aunti can i use ricotta chesse instead of paneer
plz let me know.thanks
deepti
You can use Ricotta but texture will be little different.
Is there anything replacement for milk powder?
The recipe was easy now to try it out, thank you.
I have made these pedas, they were very good… But something was different abut mine. They contained little brown pieces from the mix at the end (paneer, milk, milk powder). But in the end, they were DELICIOUS. (BTW, my mixture mad 14 pedas.)
Hi Manjula,
This recipe (and all of your others) look amazing. I am making pedas over my holiday break from school with my cousins.
Thank you so much. 🙂
MAdam ..Mother cant thank you enough.God Bless you and may you get the best of all worlds. You are playing the role of GODMother.Immense Thankyou.
Hi aunty
Thank you for all your recipes. This recipe did not work as planned. The resulting mixture started oozing oil after sometime and was too powdery for me to make pedas. Can you help me with this? Any idea where I went wrong.

may i use the paneer readymade as it is awailabale in market says Amulpaneer?
Hello Aunti,
Can I use this mawa for gulabjamun also. I bought Nanak mawa from market and gulabjamun cam every nice and tasty..no balls inside. I want to make same kind of mawa at home.
Please suggest.
Thanks
hi, i will like to know …this measurement given says cups…so can we use any size of cup??thank you
Simran, Yes
This turned out well! Thank you Manjula … I am learning SO MUCH from you, and I really appreciate your efforts! I think I should have let the khoya cool just a teeny bit more before adding the sugar, but I was still able to form the pedas. Since I made these for Krishna’s appearance day, I decided to add a little yellow food color to brighten them up a bit — they are quite lovely I think. I haven’t tasted them yet, not until after they are offered, but they smell delicious. I think once they sit in the fridge for a bit they will attain the right consistency.
hi,
i’ve tried to make the paneer just now. i use high calcium milk and lime juice instead of lemon juice but the curd does not separate from the milk. is this because of the milk or lime juice?can anybody please tell me what do i do wrong?
Nina,
I think it is because of milk.
Hi manjula. I tried your penda recipe and it did not come out like yours. While I cooked it it never formed a dough it remained with lumps in it . I think maybe my paneer was hard . Pliz help
Safi, Paneer was too dry
I am confused about the correct cup measurements between the video and the written recipe. can anyone specify please?
3/4 cup milk powder, 3/4 cup milk, 3/4 cup homemade paneer …
Nisha, as Swa says their is a difference between the measurements in Video and written recipe. You suggested the written one. So was just wondering did you tried it on your own? As I’m about to cook it.
Rakhi,
Thank you pointing out the mistake; I have corrected the written recipe. I am getting better slowly in editing and writing.
Thank you so much, Aunty! 🙂 Will try your recipe soon and let you know how it turns out.
dear aunt,
hello i am nina ..i want to knw tht wht is karma ?? it is javan ??
thx u so much
Dear aunty,
I tried this recipe today and could make a dough. But when I added sugar into the hot dough, it became very soft and could not roll into balls. I kept the loose mixture in the refrigerator. How can I make use of the above mixture? Could you please tell me what went wrong in my recipe?
You added the sugar while dough was really hot and therefore it became very soft.. so wait until it cools for alittle bit like warm to the touch then add the sugar.
Hi Manjuben,
Thanks for the lovely tips on making Penda.
I tried & it turned out good.
But sugar was quite crystalized. Is it okay to use powder sugar?
Thanks Ila
Dear Manjula Aunty,
Thank u so much for this wonderful receipe. I followed your steps exactly & the pedas came out excellent. My husband loved it a lot. I also tried your Bengali Rasgulla & it came out perfect. Always my rasgullas use to break but this time none of them were broken. I do send my receipes to another website. Can i post this receipe there so that other viewers can also be benefitted only if you permit? Kindly reply. Thank you

Dear Majula Aunty,
I tried making pedas, everything went well until after i mixed milk and milk powder with paneer in ghee. I put 3 tablespoons of ghee, even after 15 mins my consistency was not like what i saw in your video. i could see a lot of ghee and spooned some out. I was even unable to make peda shapes and so i had to flatten it out in a plate and cut it up like barfi. i used the exact measurements you mentioned but somehow my end product did not look the same as in your video. what do you think went wrong?
Dear Aunt,
I really enjoyed looking at you making the peda, I would really like to make the homemade paneer, but I am not getting it right. Thank you.
The demonstration was perfect I’ll be trying them and will post the comments.
Hello Manjula Aunty, I try many of ur recipes and they come out great. But the pedas did not come out very good. I used the same proportion given by you, but even with the khova, it was bringing out lot of butter(ghee) and it did not come out dry like yours. What do you think is my mistake……pls reply. But the taste was awesome…
dear manjula anuty
i tried this recipe twice n both time it did not turn out good… first time i could not turn into ball.. it was all falling apart… then i tried again this time it was sticky… i did put the sugar when it was cool of completely… i m not sure what mistake i m doing if u can help that would b great
thank you anuty
Dee,
If the mix of paneer, milk and milk powder became too dry you will not be able to make peda it will little crumbly, remember as the khoya will cool it will be little dry it is making more on khoya if it becomes dry you can sprinkle few drops of warm milk.
Dear Aunty,
I am planning to make these pedas for navrathri. But I dont hv the milk powder with me.Can u suggest any substitute for the milk powder
Thank you Aunty
Dear Manjula Aunty,

Dear Manjula Aunty,
Can Koya be made ahead of time and used in other recipes that call for it? If so, how long will it keep in the refrigerator before going bad?
Judy,
Khoya can be refrigerated for about two weeks.
Hello Manjual Aunty,
Can Koya be made and used later in other recipes? If so, how long will it stay in the refrigerator before going bad?
Hello aunty,
I ‘ve tried making almost all your dessert recipes and was successful making them except for boondi and pedas. In pedas after trasferring the khoya into a plate and kneading it into a dough after it has cooled doen with sugar the dough turns out so soft that i fail to make those small balls. Aunty , why is there a difference in measurement of ingredients between your video and the website ? Is it 1/3 or 3/4 cup , pls clarify…
aleena
Dear Manjula Aunty,

Hi Manjula Aunty,
I have seen your PEDA recipe video. You have mentioned use of paneer in it. Can i use readymade cottage cheese crumbles available in stores instead of paneer?
Richa,
Use my recipe as a guide line and make changes as the time permits or you just want to try out. Half the fun is experimenting!
Dear Manjula ji,
Can we use condensed milk instead of milk & milk powder ?
