Pizza – who can name someone that does not enjoy pizza?  Now has become a universal food loved by all!  There are so many variations of pizza.  There are a number of recipes for pizza dough, sauce, and toppings.  I like to make all my pizzas from scratch.  There’s nothing better than biting into that first slice of fresh, hot, homemade pizza.

Recipe will make 2 and will serve 4.

Prep time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 30 mins

 Homemade Pizza Recipe by ManjulaIngredients:

for Dough

  • 2-1/2 cup all-purpose flour (plain flour, maida)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil preferred,
  • Approx. 1 cup lukewarm water, 110 degree F
  • About 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour for rolling

for Sauce

  • 3 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil preferred
  • 1 teaspoons Italian herbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon chili flake
  • 2 teaspoons corn starch

for Topping

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sliced bell pepper in small pieces (capsicum, Shimla mirch)
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms

Method

for Dough

  1. Add the yeast to lukewarm water and set it aside for about 5 minutes, mix it well making sure yeast has dissolved.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, salt and oil and mix. I am using food processer with dough blade to make dough. Note: for pizza dough should be knead well, you can use standing mixer with a dough attachment, or make the dough by hand.
  3. Add yeast water run the food processor for 4-5 minutes, stopping every minute for few seconds. Make sure dough is very soft but not sticky if needed add more water or if it is too sticky add little more flour. When dough is ready add 1 tablespoon of oil and run the food processor for about half a minute more.
  4. Take out the dough over floured surface and knead the dough until smooth and elastic will take about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Grease large bowl with oil, and oil the dough all around lightly, cover the bowl. Set aside the dough in a warm area, for about two hours, dough should be double in size.
  6. Knead the dough again over lightly floured surface and divide the dough into 2 equal parts. And let them rest for 3-4 minutes, before rolling.

Making the sauce

  1. Add oil into a pan over medium high heat. Add Italian herbs, black pepper, and chili flakes stir for few seconds add tomatoes, salt and sugar. Cook until tomatoes have become mushy and most of the water from tomatoes has evaporated. Mix the corn starch with 2 tablespoons of water and add to the tomatoes. Reduce the heat to low stir the sauce for few minutes until sauce becomes the consistency of soft batter. If tomatoes are too sour use little more sugar. Set aside.

Preparing the Pizza

  1. Preheat the oven a4 425 degree F (225 Celsius).
  2. Grease the pizza pan, I am using 14 inch pan.
  3. Lightly flour roll into a 13 inch circle. Transferred to greased 12-in. pizza pan; build up edges slightly. Lightly greased the rolled dough, this helps making the pizza crisp.
  4. Spoon a few tablespoons of sauce into the center of the pizza and use the back of a spoon to spread it out to within one inch of edges. Spread your toppings bell pepper, mushrooms, sprinkle the cheese.
  5. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes depend on the oven, until the golden brown.
  6. Slice and serve.

Suggestions

When you make pizza and crust comes out soggy every time, did not cook well and you don’t know what you are doing wrong!  For that bake the pizza before adding any topping or sauce at 375° for about 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Spread sauce and topping bake again for about 10 minutes or until pizza is done.

  1. I tried this recipe yesterday and it was really easy. The pizza was very tasty. Tomorrow again I m going to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing these recipes. I am waiting for your next recipe.

  2. Tried this recipe for the first time today. Came out really good. We will never be buying pizza outside anymore…tasty! Thanks Manjula

  3. Lovely recipe… tastes just like a restaurant pizza… I am a jain too and most of my guests do not eat yeast products. How can i replace that to get the same taste.

I would like to cook in oven only. Not on stove top.

    1. Dipa, I am Italian and sometimes I have the same problem…if you don’t want to use dry yeast you can make your own sourdough (but it takes a long time and some care, and I don’t think it’s jain), or use baking powder. For now the best results I have had are with baking powder and some yogurt in the mix, let it sit for a while before baking it, it will turn soft not like cardboard. But I can’t help you with this specific recipe.

  4. Dear mam
thanks so much for this do u think sour curd can b used to make dough for pizza as yeast is doubtful to use so asking plz do reply n inform us
    thanks

  5. Manjula-ji,
First, thanks for your wonderful recipes and nice instructions!

Here in India, would you know if there are ways of mimicing a regular oven with either a gas stove or an electric OTG?

Also could you show how to make a Chicago-style (Pizzeria Uno style) deep dish pizza? Preferably with a yeast substitute rather than with yeast? (Would curd work like yeast? )

    Thanks!

  6. i have treid pizza twice so far and it did not turn out well the both times.the crust did not cook well and did not increase in saize( i ment while in the oven). i dont know what i amdoung wrong. and this time the pan wasfull with water. mat be addind too many vegies?
bcz of the water the base did not cook at all. the sauce tasted very well. can you please help me why i am having all these issue?
    thanks

    1. Raj, depends the veggies you are using, if you want to use lot of veggies for topping it is a good idea to stir fry them before so most of the water has evaporated.

    2. If your pizza crust didn’t rise , check the yeast packet and make sure it hasn’t expired. Also the water should be slightly warm. To hat will kill the yeast.

  7. manjula aunty all ur recipes r simple n tasty. I had made pizza at home few days back with amul mozrella cheese but it became very oily as cheese left all its oil n was not tasty at all. Can u please tell me remedy for this ? Thanx !!!

  8. Dear Manjula ji,

I tried this recipe and the texture of pizza base turned out good but not really OK taste-wise. The reason I guess is maybe an amount of yeast taken is not correct and it should be measured by the tea spoon and not by the table spoon i e one tea spoon will work with the amount of flour you have mentioned. I have tried like this and the result was nice. Please tell your suggestions and more tips!
    Thanks..

  9. Madam,
I have tried many of ur recipies and they have turned out good. I just have a small request if you can replace recipies using whole wheat flour instead of maida for the dishes to turn out healthier at the same time tastier.

    1. I substitute maida with whole wheat flour in almost every recipe and it turns out equally good . I also do not put corn starch at all in the sauces and the sauces taste and look just fine.

  10. thanks ma’am, I like your recipes too much, I am a from a background where we do not ate onions and garlic and there is very less recipes without it I found whenever I searched.thanks again because of your recipes I can cook anything equally or more tasty dishes from those dishes.
