Bread Uttapam
Uttapam is a popular South Indian dish. Traditionally uttapam is made with rice and lentil batter, which can be a long process. Bread Uttapam, on the other hand, is instant and easy to make. Not to mention it tastes delicious. Uttapam is a thick dosa, or pancake, with vegetables cooked over skillet. It tastes divine served hot and with a side of coconut chutney.
Ingredients
- 3 slice white bread
- 3 tbsp sooji coarse samolina
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour maida, plain flour
- 1/4 cup yogurt curd, dahai
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp cumin seeds jeera
- 1/4 cup bell pepper, finely chopped capsicum
- 1/4 cup tomatoes finely chopped remove the seeds
- 1 green chili finely chopped
- 2 tsp ginger shredded adrak
- 2 tbsp cilantro finely chopped hara dhania
- 2 tbsp oil to cook
Instructions
- Remove the crest from bread and cut them in small pieces.
- In a blender add bread, sooji, all-purpose flour, salt, yogurt, and water, and blend to a thick and smooth paste.
- Take out the batter in a bowl and add the remaining ingredients, cumin seeds, bell pepper, tomatoes, ginger, green chili, and cilantro, mix it well. Batter should be thick in consistency add more water if needed, batter should not be too thick but should not be runny.
- Heat the skillet over medium heat and lightly grease the skillet. Pour about 2 tablespoons of batter and spread consistency should be of thick pancake.
- Pour little oil around uttapam. Let it cook for about 2 minutes and turn them over, bread uttapam should be golden brown from both sides and this should take about four minutes. Notes: do not cook on high heat, uttapam will not cook through.
Notes
Serve bread uttapam with your choice of chutney, I like to serve with coconut chutney or green cilantro chutney.

Hello, Madam. Nice recipe. I couldn’t understand some of the ingredients. Can you please explain what are they called in Marathi ? (or in Hindi)
Sooji coarse (semolina)
Bell pepper
Cilantro
Sooji coarse is nothing but sooji used for halwa. Bell pepper is capsicum. Cilantro is coriander leaves (Dhandia patha)
Soooji is semolina
Bell pepper is capsicum or shim last mirth
CILANTRO is dhaniya or coriander

Hi Manjula I love your recipes. I did a variant of this uthappam by cutting wheat bread slices into 4 pieces and dipping them in slightly sour idli batter which was seasoned with vegs as you mentioned. This was also very tasty and we can avoid using maida
Nithya, Thank you for sharing, it is always more fun to make the changes to your taste.

this is very easy recipe and quick to make but we should keep in mind that lentil batter is much more healthier than bread and all purpose flour batter…once in a while it is ok but not to replace this with our authentic dosa batter..
what kind of belnder are you using in this video?
Hope I am using Magic Bullet, but you can use any blender that will work.
Fine rawa or thick which one it is

Hello Aunty,
Thank you for sharing such yummy n easy to make recipes.
Just need a clarification for Bread Uttapam recipe it is written as 1/4 tablespoons of yougurt. Where as in video it says 1/4 cup of yougurt. Can you plz clarify whether its1/4cup or 1/4 tablespoon.
Thanks
Navi
Navpreet Kaur, thank you, yogurt should be 1/4 cup. I fixed the mistake.
The name of the dish is “Uthappa” and not “uthappam”. Atleast that is what we have called it since childhood.
Utthapa is in Kannada and Uthappam is in Telugu.
Uttapam is also Tamil
may substitute the yogurt with another nondairy elements. can i use coconut milk instead of water?
Nice and easy it sounds.can I substitute it with brown bread?
great
It looks yummy! what can I use instead of yogurt that isn’t from milk.
Use soya milk with juice of one lime to get the taste of non dairy yoghurt. I do it all the time.
Was it medium sooji used? Since there are many types of sooji can you please tell which exact sooji was used in this recipe.
Thank you
Can we use wheat bread?
I couldn’t make them exactly according to your recipe, as I didn’t have all the ingredients. BUT they were still amazing – the vegetables and spices worked so well. I used finely shredded, salted and squeezed zucchini instead of capsicum. Thanks so much for sharing this.
my son like it very much
i try this recepie, very tasty and my son like it very much, thanks
Thanks for the recipe.
Thanks for this recipe.
is it 1/4 cup or 1/4 tbspn of yougurt???
Dia,

Deepa, what did you mean by edit
Deepa, I edited, thank you

Dia, 1/4 cup yogurt
Can we make the batter in night and use it in morning???
