Ingredients

  • 3 green Granny Smith Apples peeled, cored and sliced
  • 2 Tbsp water
  • ¾ cup oatmeal
  • ¼ cup walnut crushed
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ cup butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven 370 degree F.
  • In a bowl mix oatmeal, walnut, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and butter. Set aside.
  • Spread the sliced apple evenly in the 9-inch pie pan.
  • Sprinkle the water evenly over the apple.
  • Spread the oatmeal mix evenly over apple.
  • Put the pie plate over the center rack of oven.
  • Let it bake for 20 minutes.
  • Take it out from oven. Tilt the pie plate a little and use a spoon to move some of the apple juice; put it over pie evenly.
  • Put the pie plate again back in oven and bake for 10 more minutes.

Notes

  • Putting the juice over the top of the pie keeps the crumbs moist and crunchy.
Serving Suggestion
  • Serve hot.
  • Tastes great topped with scoop of vanilla ice cream!

    1. Ok I finally tried the recipe, I don’t know if it can be called a traditional crumble but I don’t care because it’s so good. I ate it topped with homemade zabaione ice cream, which unfortunately contains both eggs (though I think they can be substituted) and alcohol (marsala wine, there is no substitute) so I cannot share it with you. I think they paired together very well. Another good pairing would be almond ice cream. I used toasted skin-on almonds instead of walnuts because that’s what I had and they worked well, I also subbed the water with lemon juice because my apples were not that tart.
I hope you are doing well in this time of pandemia, please you and your family stay safe.
      Thank you, Didina

  1. Hi, I’m sorry to sound critical, but the topping for English apple crumble, which is what this is, should be made on a half fat to flour basis, by weight, then rubbed together, as if to make shortcrust pastry, but without adding any liquid. The same amount of sugar as the fat can be added for sweetness. Oats can also be added for extra crunch. It should be crisp and crunchy when cooked, so tipping the liquid over it at the end is not recommended.

  2. Dear Manjula Ji, thank you very much for sharing your recipes. I have tried a number of them and they have come out excellent! Somehow the apple crumb pie turned out too ‘liquidy’. Is it possible that the recipe is missing an ingredient, namely flour? Other versions of the recipe do require flour.

    1. You can whisk together 3/4 TBL cornstarch and 1/4 cup of water. Pour over the apple mixture and toss with hands to cover all the pieces. This will thicken up the apples so there were be no excess water. For the crumble, you can use 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour and 1/2 cup oatmeal, but my guess is that this won’t have much to do with the excess water, unless it helps absorb the liquid from the apples as they cook?

  3. Hi Manjula Aunty,

I want to know what is oatmeal and if we can substitue it with something else because where I live in Middle East , I am not able to find it.

    Thankyou.
